A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CLEANING BOTH YOUR BODY AND YOUR HOME

As a GAPS coach, I support individuals in improving their health through the Gut and Psychology/Physiology Syndrome (GAPS) approach. As Hippocrates famously said, “All disease begins in the gut.”

The GAPS Nutritional Protocol focuses on restoring gut health—helping to heal and seal the gut lining, reducing the flow of toxins into the body and allowing the body to do what it is naturally designed to do: heal. While healing timelines vary from person to person, the body has an incredible capacity for repair when given the right support.

In an ideal world, we would all begin by transforming our diets. However, for many people, dietary change can feel overwhelming at first. A powerful and often more accessible starting point would be the home you live in.

When we reduce the toxic load within our home, we begin to support the body without needing to change everything at once.

Why Reducing Toxic Load Matters

When we think about “toxins,” food is often the first thing that comes to mind. But what we breathe in, absorb through our skin and surround ourselves with daily, is just as significant.

Modern living has introduced a vast number of synthetic chemicals into our environments. The more industrialised a society becomes, the greater the exposure to these substances — and the greater the burden placed on the body.

Every day the body works continuously to process and eliminate unwanted substances. When this load becomes too great — through diet, environmental exposure, stress and chemical contact — the body can become overwhelmed. This places additional strain on:

  • The gut lining

  • The liver and detoxification pathways

  • The nervous system

Over time, this burden can contribute to a wide range of health challenges, from skin conditions and allergies to hormonal imbalances, immune dysfunction and neurological symptoms.

Reducing toxic exposure is therefore not about perfection — it’s about supporting the body so it can function more efficiently.

Reducing Toxic Load

One of the most overlooked sources of daily chemical exposure is conventional cleaning products. Each time we clean our homes, wash our clothes or use fragranced products, we are:

  • Breathing in chemical residues

  • Absorbing substances through the skin

  • Contributing to indoor air pollution

Many conventional products contain synthetic fragrances, preservatives and harsh chemicals that can:

  • Irritate the respiratory system

  • Disrupt the microbiome (both within the body and in our home environment)

  • Be absorbed through the skin

  • Contribute to long-term toxic load

What goes down our drains doesn’t simply disappear — it enters waterways, impacting aquatic life and the wider ecosystem.

For those following the GAPS approach, sensitivity to these substances can be heightened. This is why simplifying cleaning routines (often down to just a few natural ingredients) can be so beneficial.

The Beauty of Natural Cleaning

One of the most empowering aspects of natural cleaning is its simplicity.

You don’t need cupboards full of products. You don’t need synthetic fragrances to feel “clean.” And you certainly don’t need to spend a fortune.

Instead, you can rely on a small number of time-tested ingredients that:

  • Work in harmony with the body

  • Break down safely in the environment

  • Are cost-effective and multi-purpose

This approach aligns beautifully with GAPS principles, reducing unnecessary inputs and supporting a more balanced, natural way of living.

Creating a Healthier Home Environment

When synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals are removed, something subtle but powerful happens:

  • The air feels lighter

  • Surfaces feel truly clean

  • Skin and respiratory irritation may reduce

  • The space feels calmer and more supportive

Within a GAPS framework, this is especially important, as the nervous system plays a key role in healing.

A clean home should support the body—not challenge it.

A Gentler, More Conscious Way to Clean

Natural cleaning isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about making small, consistent choices that reduce the load on your body and the environment.

By simplifying what we use in our homes, we:

  • Support overall health and resilience

  • Reduce environmental impact

  • Create safer spaces for our families

  • Reconnect with a more natural way of living

It’s a quiet shift—but a powerful one.
